The Father Figures children books series highlights the importance of men as positive role models to children without fathers in the home. In a society where more than ten million households are led by single mothers, Father Figures encourages mothers and children to seek out males for mentorship opportunities in their community. The book series is the brainchild of Derrich Phillips who is a product of a single mother home. Derrich wanted to give young boys guidance to build the characteristics needed to become great young men. Requill Phillips, Derrich’s wife, loved the idea and wrote the counterpart for young girls.
“Father Figures not only prepares readers to build a rich character through the lessons taught in the books but hopefully the series will also impact the literacy rate,” said Derrich Phillips. Statistics provided by the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, state that two-thirds of kids who aren’t reading well in fourth grade will end up on welfare or in jail and have a 78% chance of not catching up to their reading benchmarks. Sixty percent of juvenile delinquents and 80% of adult inmates are illiterate. “Giving black children books to read with characters that look like them will hopefully make them more interested and excited to read,” said Requill Phillips.
The book for young boys is entitled Larry’s Journey to Manhood and the girl’s book is titled Tina’s First Dance. Both books in the Father Figures children’s book series are available for purchase on Amazon starting February 1, 2020.
About the Authors
Derrich and Requill Phillips met in 2011 through an online dating website and were married in front of God, family, and friends in 2015. Since then they have supported each other in their respective careers. Derrich is an author, podcaster, and motivational speaker who helps children and young adults build the skills needed to live a rich life.
Requill is a social media maven who uses her 15 plus years of marketing experience to create content for YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. The couple wears many hats but being loving parents to their daughter Legacy is the most important role.
